I want to talk about a topic near and dear to my heart: entrepreneurship. But not just any entrepreneurship—entrepreneurship driven by the incredible women of the Midwest, Appalachia, the Ozarks, and other rural areas. Because let me tell you, ladies, we have what it takes to lead the charge and sow the seeds of change in our communities and beyond.

Now, you might be wondering: why focus on women in these regions specifically? Well, the answer is simple: because we’re a force to be reckoned with. We’re the daughters of pioneers and the descendants of strong, resilient women who didn’t let anything stand in their way. We know how to roll up our sleeves and get things done, whether it’s running a farm, managing a household, or starting a business from scratch.

And even more than all of that, that’s who I am, and that’s who my mother, aunts and grandmothers are (and were).

Beyond our inherent grit and determination, there are a few other reasons why Midwest, Appalachian, and Ozark women are uniquely positioned to lead the charge in entrepreneurship:

  1. Resourcefulness: Growing up in rural areas teaches us to be resourceful and innovative. We know how to make the most of what we have and find creative solutions to challenges. These are invaluable skills when it comes to starting and growing a business.
  2. Community Support: Our tight-knit communities are built on a foundation of support and solidarity. When one of us succeeds, we all succeed. This sense of community can be a powerful asset when launching a new venture, providing both moral support and practical assistance along the way.
  3. Authenticity: Rural life has a way of grounding us and keeping us connected to our roots. This authenticity shines through in our businesses, whether it’s a farm-to-table restaurant serving up homegrown goodness or a handmade craft shop showcasing the beauty of our region.
  4. Untapped Potential: Despite our strengths, women in rural areas are often overlooked when it comes to entrepreneurship opportunities. But that’s starting to change. With the rise of remote work and e-commerce, the playing field is leveling, and women from all backgrounds are seizing the opportunity to build businesses on their own terms.

So, what can we do to harness our potential and lead the charge in entrepreneurship? It starts with believing in ourselves and our abilities. It means embracing our unique strengths and using them to our advantage. It means seeking out mentors and resources to help us navigate the challenges of starting and growing a business. And most importantly, it means never underestimating the power of our collective voices and the impact we can have when we come together as a community.

So let’s roll up our sleeves, ladies, and get to work sowing the seeds of change. The world is waiting for what we have to offer, and I have no doubt that together, we can make our mark and create a brighter future for generations to come.

Here’s to blazing new trails and building businesses that reflect the strength and resilience of Midwest, Appalachia, and Ozark women everywhere.
